Warsaw Energy Plant: A Pillar of the Capital’s Waste Management System

The Warsaw Energy Plant (Warszawska Wytwórnia Energii, WWE)—an exhibitor at POLECO and Poland’s largest municipal waste thermal treatment facility—processes approximately 265,000 tonnes of residual waste into electricity and heat each year. Meeting strict environmental standards, the plant plays a key role in stabilising Warsaw’s waste management system.

WWE was built to meet the needs of Poland’s capital in the field of thermal waste treatment. Warsaw generates nearly 700,000 tonnes of all types of waste annually—more than some entire Polish regions.

The facility converts waste into energy through high-efficiency combined heat and power (CHP) generation. The thermal treatment process produces more than 100,000 MWh of electricity per year and at least 200,000 MWh of heat annually, equivalent to the annual energy needs of tens of thousands of households.

Waste is processed at temperatures exceeding 850°C. It contains sufficient energy to ensure that, under normal operating conditions, no external fuel is required. The plant uses grate-fired boiler technology.

 

Waste collection vehicles delivering material to the facility travel along a 120-metre-long elevated roadway. On average, around 100 vehicles per day deliver waste to WWE.

After arriving at the unloading hall, the waste is transferred to Poland’s largest waste bunker, measuring 110 metres in length and 15 metres in width. The bunker, where the waste undergoes a hygienisation process, can store up to 5,500 tonnes of waste. This reserve ensures the uninterrupted operation of the plant for approximately six days.

WWE was built using advanced technological solutions and meets all applicable environmental protection standards. The facility was developed in line with BAT (Best Available Techniques) standards.

 

The plant is designed to operate safely for both residents and the surrounding environment. A negative-pressure system prevents odours from escaping outside the facility. Air from the unloading hall and waste bunker is used as primary air in the combustion chambers. WWE also complies with applicable noise emission standards.

An integral part of the facility is a sorting plant for separately collected waste from the yellow and blue waste streams, helping to increase municipal waste recycling rates in Warsaw. The sorting facility at WWE currently has a capacity of approximately 30,000 tonnes of waste per year. It is planned to be expanded, which will double its current capacity.
